Speaker 1 (00:14):
Welcome everyone to a special edition episode of On Call
with KB. Before I preview what's to come in Part
B of our very first season, I actually wanted to
do something a little different this week and talk about
a case that is not making season one of the
show but is still wildly interesting to me, So stay tuned.

(00:49):
For those of you who are unfamiliar. On Call with
KB is the show where I KB take you through
the wildest episodes of your favorite medical drama and discuss
its scientific and ardical accuracy after doing a lovely deep
dive and getting some tea on the episode itself with
a whole host of super fans. Now, after that super
fan segment, I am joined by other scientific medical experts

(01:14):
or creatives behind the show to dig a little bit
deeper into the science behind the scenes. Now, while that's
a normal episode, and please, if you're new here, go
catch up on part A of season one. That's right,
the first five episodes are out, so catch up on that.
But this is a special edition episode which is just me,
myself and I and my best Beyonce voice uh here

(01:37):
to just talk about one episode of Grey's Anatomy this
season that did not make it to our final episodes,
but it's still wildly, wildly interesting in my personal opinion,
and I wanted to highlight it also before just giving
you just a little tease about what's to come in
the second half of our first season. So, first off

(01:59):
the sleeve, this episode is no different when it comes
to drama and and high stakes. It's Richard's birthday and
he's feeling some type of way that people aren't making
a big deal about it. He's feeling like he's being
pushed out by hunt Um, which we know by the
end of the episode is not the case. But he
wants to keep working, he wants to keep living life,
he wants to keep enjoying life, and he wants to

(02:20):
do that in this episode with Catherine by his side.
And so it's so interesting because he has this revolutionary
case legitimately fall into his lap Um. It's actually Bailey's patient.
She finds the patient who has the twin that's absorbed
in his in his body, and you know, he she

(02:41):
gives that patient to Richard as a birthday present, and
it kind of reignites and reinvigorates his love of medicine
and his love of teaching, and so you know, it's
it's a really special case for him because he doesn't
want to be discarded, He doesn't want to be thrown away.
He still wants to do what he loves. But he
has also realized that he's getting older and age definitely

(03:03):
plays a part in this, particularly in the workplace. But
before we dive into the case, I just have to
say we start the episode with Callie and Derek beefing
about their research being at ud Callie has an attorney,
Derek is like, what is happening. By the time we
get to the end, you know, they were able to
really kind of stand firm, come back together, and, as

(03:26):
Callie likes to say, overthrow the government. Right elsewhere, Catherine
shows up to the hospital. She is pissed that Jackson
and Abril eloped, and you know she's thinking about this
not only from a business perspective, because she's like, have
you guys even talked about this? Like did you even
talk about the decision of getting married? You know, Jackson

(03:48):
has a lot of responsibilities when it comes to the
Avery Foundation, and she expects all of her hard work
and everything that happens with the foundation to continue on.
And it's interesting because you know, she's upset with Jackson.
She's upset with April, and from first glance, you think
it's about business. But when she's having this conversation with

(04:10):
the two of them trying to convince April to sign
a postnuptual agreement and and trying to tell Jackson that
he needs to protect himself in his assets, what April
is really hearing is a wounded mother. Katherine is upset
because Jackson is her only child and he eloped and
technically hijacked April's wedding to Matthew and left Stephanie in

(04:33):
the dust. And so by them choosing to love one
another and choosing to get married in this fashion, they
still broke a lot of people's hearts. And it's interesting
that Jackson doesn't realize that his mom is one of them.
So the whole time I'm watching this episode, like, Jackson,
you owe your mama an apology, and the fact that
he doesn't think is true and it doesn't need to

(04:55):
happen is wild to me. Like it's really the fact
that April, you know, with all of the goodness and
all of the faith and all the purity and her heart,
has to force him to apologize to his mother. I'm like, Jackson,
that's a problem. You should know that you treated your
mother poorly in the scenario, and you should know that
after she sacrificed her entire life to bring you into

(05:15):
this world and and give you this life, you could
at least have invited her to this wedding. Now, granted
again they did hijack abrils all the wedding and somebody else,
but that's neither here nor there. She really just wanted
to feel like she was a part of his special
day because you know, at this time, she's like, I'm
never getting an opportunity for that to happen again. So
it's wild. How as the day progresses and she's walking

(05:36):
with Richard and they're talking about what they want their
lives to be in the future, she is praising how
proud she is of Jackson for taking that step, but
she said she will never tell him that, And I
was like, girl, Catherine is peak black Mama in this
episode for sure. Um, you know, I found this episode

(05:56):
to be really intriguing in a lot of ways. One,
we have Yang who is on her way out right
and she knows it, so she's trying to set own
up she's trying to soften the blow of her leaving.
And at the core of it, they really are friends,
and she wants him to find love, and she wants
him to have happiness. She wants him to be a parent,
you know, all of the things that her and their
relationship couldn't provide. She's really working over time to do

(06:21):
and I kind of get it. I understand it. It's
Christina's way of managing this. It's Christina's way of dealing
with this. And while it's non conventional and definitely non traditional,
I definitely think, you know, it is the Christina yangway
Um Kiki that girl Palmer is in this episode, and
shout out to her because I think that, honestly, Kicky

(06:44):
Palmer is arguably one of the most talented people want
to play it, if not the most, because who else
is naturally founding a comedian can do serious dramas, can sing,
can dance, who's had the type of career, can be
a talk show host who now owns her studio, like,
let's talk about it. I think that she's brilliant and
talented and she deserves her flowers. And in this episode,

(07:06):
playing a teen mom whose parents have left her, but
she has a serious heart issue and she just wants
to be a part of the clinical trial. And Yang
is just really like, I'm sorry, you don't qualify. You
don't qualify. And she wants to live for this baby.
She doesn't want to die. She wants to be a mom,
she wants to be a parent. It's such an interesting
journey in this episode, and I really really loved it.

(07:29):
But to the case, that is wildly interesting. Listen, they
found the teeth, the lens, the spinal column of the
absorbed twin in this man's body, and so it is
so interesting because human camerism um definitely exists in the world.

(07:52):
So I found this lovely article that is from the
European Journal of Medical Genetics. Uh, and this is volume
sixty three, issue nine, that happened in September, literally in
the middle of the pandemic. But also that just dives
into the term chimera, which um apparently has been borrowed
from Greek mythology, and it's the long history of use

(08:15):
in biology and genetics, and so a chimera is an
organism whose cells are derived from two or more zygotes.
So the first human chimera was reported in nineteen fifty three,
and you know it likely happened in utero while his
mother was pregnant again based on this episode, you know,
it took him about ten years worth of pain before

(08:36):
you know, he actually got treated and they were able
to see exactly what was going on that good old
Dr Bailey of course, because she's the baddest um in Seattle,
Grace or Um Grace West or Mercy West. I'm not
entirely sure what we're calling the hospital by season ten,
episode sixteen, because I'll also have to do my own

(08:57):
deepat and go back for that, but I do know
that Bailey is the baddest across the board, and if
it wasn't for her diligence, uh, you know, who knows.
But basically, this patient, Greg comes in to the e. R.
Bailey is doing an ultrasound and you know, he's like,
I've just been having this pain for such a long time,

(09:17):
but it's been about ten years, and you know, it
comes and it goes, and I just don't understand what
it is. And so Greg is a junk collector by trade,
that's his career, and so he's always finding the beauty
and things that people discard, which is really really interesting
and I've said it time and time again, but I
love the way Grace parallels in so many ways, and he,

(09:41):
you know, gets this ultrasound. Bailey is like, oh my gosh,
I think it's a tumor. Come to find out, he's
absorbed his twin. And it's interesting because instantly Greg has
like bonded with this twin. Now Greg just determines it
is a is a boy, which I was like, okay,
I don't know how we decided that this is male.
But Gregg has decided that this is his brother and

(10:03):
he doesn't want to discard it. He doesn't want it
to be discarded, just like everything else in his life.
So in order to get him to remove it, you know,
Webber really has to sell it to him. Webber really
has to be like, you know what, I will let
you keep your twin if you let me remove it,
because it's causing use of your stress, it's causing you

(10:23):
pain in your body. You know it doesn't need to
be there, and we want you to live along in
healthy life. But I'll let you keep it because I
know how you feel about things just being discarded and
pushed to the side. So it's a really really interesting
episode that I found to be one that came full circle,
and not just for Greg and you know, this absorption

(10:45):
of his twin, but for Richer too, because he finds
his purpose again through this case and through Greg Um.
And it is very very interesting. And so I found
that Greg's emotional attachment to this twin that he never
knew nothing about that had really you know, kind of
had been there all of his life apparently, but really

(11:07):
didn't start to manifest itself physically in his body until
you know, about ten years prior. That is really really interesting.
And I wonder, you know, if if those individuals in
those cases that have been studied from you know, the
the early nineteen fifties up until now, if those patients

(11:27):
felt any type of emotional connection UM as well. And
I wonder if Greg's emotional connection was just really in
terms of UM losing what was But I just think, man,
I don't know, you know, I'm curious to know more
about that, and so I want to look into, you know,

(11:47):
again the emotional impacts and and what those patients said
about the how they felt emotionally like kind of knowing
that that this occurred and and knowing that you know, UM,
they contained two different IT sets a DNA within them.
That's wildly interesting to me. So that is just something
that I wanted to chat about. Just a quick special

(12:08):
edition episode UM from one that won't make it to
this season, but it's still very, very interesting. So check
out the links to some fun articles in the show notes.
But just to preview what lies ahead for the remainder
of On Call with KB Season one. Listen, everyone asked me,

(12:31):
are you going to talk about the woman with spontaneous orgasms?

talk about the women with spontaneous orgasms. Everyone wants to
know of that is possible and why, so yes, got
to dive into that. Also going to dive into later
this season the girl who feels no pain because that

(12:52):
is an interesting, very very rare genetic disorder that I
want to dive into, UM a little bit for R
and then I cannot wait to discuss the girl who
can hear her internal organs. That's something else we will
be talking about this season, So you know, stay tuned
